Women of War

Woman/Soldier 7

This is an original production at the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB) written and directed by UAB alumna Rebecca Harper. Women of War evolved out of Euripide's Trojan Women. After having studied several translations and adaptation of this story, certain themes emerged from which all the versions held in common- such as waiting, the unknown future, the search for meaning, then cyclical nature of war, justifications for the use of force, and that it is told from the perspective of the women on the losing side. To focus on these universals the particulars of the legend of Troy were stripped away. Instead, the exploration of the cyclical nature of war was explored by using stories and scenarios from many wars throughout history. The aim was to create a piece that is timeless and geographically ambiguous to point up the universal experiences occurring in warfare.

Proof

Catherine

I was eager and excited to get to perform Catherine from Proof by David Auburn. The daughter of Robert, a recently deceased mathematical genius in his fifties and professor at the University of Chicago, and her struggle with mathematical genius and mental illness. Catherine had cared for her father through a lengthy mental illness. Upon Robert's death, his ex-graduate student Hal discovers a paradigm-shifting proof about prime numbers in Robert's office. The title refers both to that proof and to the play's central question: Can Catherine prove the proof's authorship? Along with demonstrating the proof's authenticity, the daughter also finds herself in a relationship with Hal. Throughout, the play explores Catherine's fear of following in her father's footsteps, both mathematically and mentally and her desperate attempts to stay in control. Directed by UAB student Nia Evans.

Dinner With Friends

Karen

Written by Donald Margulies and directed by UAB student Olivia Bowles.
Gabe and Karen, a happily married, middle-aged couple, live in Connecticut. They have been friends with Tom and Beth, another married couple, for many years. In fact, it was Gabe and Karen who introduced their friends in the first place. While having dinner at Gabe and Karen's home, Beth tearfully reveals that she is getting a divorce from Tom, who has been unfaithful.
Tom, who had been away on business, finds out that Beth has told their friends about the looming divorce, and hastens to Gabe and Karen's home. Tom and Beth had planned to tell their friends about their breakup together, but Tom now believes that Beth unfairly has presented herself as the wronged party, and feels he must present his own side of the story.

Angels In America: Part One

Harper

Written by Tony Kushner and directed by UAB alumna Carron Clark. The play is a complex, often metaphorical, and at times symbolic examination of AIDS and homosexuality in America in the 1980s. Certain major and minor characters are supernatural beings (angels) or deceased persons (ghosts). The play focuses on a gay couple in Manhattan, the play also has several other storylines, some of which occasionally intersect.
I played Harper, an agoraphobic Mormon housewife with incessant Valium-induced hallucinations. After a revelation from Prior (whom she meets when his heavenly vision and her hallucination cross paths), she discovers that her husband is gay and struggles with it, considering it a betrayal of her marriage.

Assistant To The Director

Written by Lauren Gunderson. This was my first experience assistant directing a main production for The University of Alabama. I was assistant to director Karla Koskinen, and focused on how to direct and work with actors one on one and as an ensemble. I am so thankful to Karla for this amazing experience, in which, I learned more about the acting process as a director and actor in two months than I had in my past three years of my college career.
